Workshop Leader & Hosts
Wendy Chambers - Qiviuq fibre artist   Wendy Chambers
Wendy is a semi-retired designer, retailer and instructor. Throughout her fibre arts career, muskox qiviuq has been her specialty. In 1984, Wendy made her first trip north of the Arctic Circle; that was the beginning of her association with the Inuvialuit of the western Arctic. She has worked in all aspects of production from the harvesting of the fibre to marketing the finished knitwear. Her research on the development of this unique fibre into a knitting yarn has taken her to the United States, England, Italy and Japan. Wendy is internationally renowned and respected as a fibre artist, creator and instructor. Qiviuq continues to be her passion. She now designs and knits for her former business, Folknits. In this weekend workshop, Wendy will share her knowledge and experience with qiviuq. She will guide you through the knitting of a pair of hand warmers, a simple kit that makes a beautiful gift fully demonstrating the characteristics of this wonderful fibre.
Marney Mitchell owner of Folknits located in her yarn shop, Knit Now   Marney Mitchell
Marney is a self-confessed knitting addict. About 35 years ago, she started knitting as a teenager in an alternative “free school” in the Yukon. Her love of knitting and the North has increased over the years. After working with Wendy at Folknits for four years, Marney bought the business and incorporated it into her shop Knit Now. The two businesses complement each other and Knit Now is a gathering place for Yukon knitters. The long Northern nights are perfect for knitters who want to cocoon in front of the woodstove. The Yukon landscape is an inspiration for artists who want to create. The combination nurtures a vibrant artistic community with fantastic fibre arts creativity! During this weekend, Marney wants you to see what makes the North so special – its unique qiviuq yarn, the amazing landscapes and its tremendous community. She is looking forward to telling you some northern ‘yarns’!
